Use of Generative Artificial Intelligence for Students

This policy is valid unless otherwise stated in the course syllabus and intended for Koç University students. Generative AI (GAI) tools are considered a supportive and enhancing resource for learning. Students are required to adhere to the principles of ethics and academic integrity when using GAI tools. For more detailed information on general principles, please click here.

Permitted Uses

Students can use the GAI tools approved and listed by the University for the following purposes:

  • Idea generation
  • Developing insights
  • Research assistance
  • Writing support

GAI tools can be used to support the learning process (e.g., explaining concepts, and creating practice questions). Students with documented disabilities are allowed to use AI tools as assistive technologies.

Restrictions and Prohibitions

GAI tools cannot replace critical thinking or original work (e.g., assignments, theses). Students must actively engage their own critical thinking processes and decision-making skills when using GAI tools. They are responsible for developing and expressing their own original ideas while using these tools. GAI should be seen as an assistive resource, not a substitute for the student’s own thinking and creativity. Direct copying and pasting outputs from GAI tools directly is strictly prohibited.

Academic Integrity

The use of GAI must be indicated in the work. It is the student’s responsibility to check the accuracy of the information generated by GAI. Concealing or misusing the GAI will be considered an academic integrity violation.

Citation and Reference

GAI use must be indicated within the text using appropriate citation and referencing methods. Students should cite AI tools in accordance with APA, MLA, or other specified writing guidelines. In the appendices of assignments, the GAI prompts used, the original outputs, and the revised versions should be included.

Accessibility

All students can use AI for tasks such as transcription or text-to-speech conversion to support diverse learning needs. For specific adaptations, consultation with the instructor and The Office of Disability Services is recommended.

Policy Updates

This policy will be updated regularly in line with technological developments and institutional needs: Students are responsible for following the current version of the policy.
